Cosmology 101: The Death of Pluto

Image via BBC

Ladies and gentlemen. We are gathered here today to commemorate the death of one of ‘The Nine’. He has been apart of our family and in our hearts from the first day we stepped into science class in High School. In science class, our teacher, in trying to help us remember The Nine, would use the famous mnemonic :

My Very Educated Mother, Just Showed Us Nine Planets/Potatoes/Pineapples”

M = Mercury

V = Venus

E = Earth

M = Mars

J = Jupiter

S = Saturn

U = Uranus

N = Neptune

P = Pluto

Sad to say, Pluto is no more! He’s not dead, he’s just not recognized as a planet. Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson and the International Astronomical Union decided to strip Pluto of its planetary status based on a new definition of planets.

In essence, a planet is a body that dominates its environment. Which means that it should be the largest body in the area it orbits. Pluto’s moon is half the size of the planet. To put that into perspective, think of Earth’s moon being just half the size of Earth.

My biggest concern though is what will become of the mnemonic we’ve cemented in our minds. ‘My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine ….’ just seems incomplete. I can see an innocent child waiting in vain for you to complete that sentence :(

Au revoir Pluto. Vous allez nous manquer. (Goodbye Pluto. We will miss you)

Artist Alert: Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg

French is truly the language of love. I am immersing myself into this beautiful language. I’ve changed the language on my browser to French and I listen to French news. I also found some French bloggers out there in blog-sphere: One French Word, French A L.A Cart & Ici on Parle Francais (We Speak French).

(Note to self: Add visit France to bucket list).

I found this song Je T’aime … Moi Non Plus on Guylaine’s music blog GCG Creative Enterprise. The song is a dialogue between two lover during sex.

Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg – Je T’aime … Moi Non Plus

Lyrics:

French

Je t’aime… Moi non plus

(refrain)
Je t’aime, je t’aime
Oh oui je t’aime !

Moi non plus
Oh mon amour

Comme la vague irrésolue

Je vais, je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins
Je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins
Et je me retiens

(refrain)

Tu es la vague, moi l’île nue

Tu vas, tu vas et tu viens
Entre mes reins
Tu vas et tu viens
Entre mes reins
Et je te rejoins

(refrain)

Comme la vague irrésolue

Je vais, je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins
Je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins
Et je me retiens

Tu vas, tu vas et tu viens
Entre mes reins
Tu vas et tu viens
Entre mes reins
Et je te rejoins

(refrain)

L’amour physique est sans issue

Je vais, je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins
Je vais et je viens
Et je me retiens
Non ! Maintenant viens !

English

Je t’aime… Mon non plus

I love you, I love you
Oh, yes I love you!
No longer me
Oh, my love…
Like the undecided wave
I go, I go and I come
Between your back
I go and I come
Between your back
And I hold back.

I love you, I love you
Oh, yes I love you!
no longer me
Oh, my love…
You are the wave, I’m the naked island
You go, you go and you come
Between my back
You go and you come
Between my back
And I rejoin you.

I love you, I love you
Oh, yes I love you!
no longer me
Oh, my love…
Like the undecided wave
I go, I go and I come
Between your back
I go and I come
Between your back
And I hold back.

You go, you go and you come
Between my back
You go and you come
Between my back
And I rejoin you.

I love you, I love you
Oh, yes I love you!
No longer me
Oh, my love…
The physical love is without a way out
I go, I go and I come
Between your back
I go and I come back
And I hold back
No! Now come!

The Never Ending Meme Pt. 2

Today we ripped off a blogger named Tense Teacher of the blog Tense for a Reason. (Yes we know that we’ve ripped her off not so long ago as well. It’s pretty amazing since she stopped posting in 2007. But that’s where we live as a thief). Also, it’s long so we’ll do it in parts. She does not say where she got it from. But, it was probably stolen there as well. So, of course, that will be as far as we go. Tracing back our theft’s thieves might take some time. Take the time to comment on other player’s posts. It’s a great way to make new friends! Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

My new Wal-Mart job

After landing my new job as a Wal-Mart greeter, a good find for many retirees, I lasted less than a day….

About two hours into my first day on the job, a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance.

We all have a role to play

I watched HUGO with my wife the other day and I must say we were quite impressed. It deserved all the awards it got at the Oscars. I won’t give a review but I think it’s worth watching. One of the things that stood out in my mind was when Hugo Cabret (the protagonist), brought his friend Isabelle inside the clock tower in Paris in the night and showed her the well lit city. He then said to her that a machine never comes with more parts than it needs. If you think of the world as one big machine, we all have our part to play. No one is insignificant.

I found that quite profound because sometimes we’re merely existing, wondering what’s our role on this big planet of ours or even if our little contribution will make a difference.

So I’m here to tell you that our contribution matters. We are all important. We all have our role to play.

Joseph Kony’s Child Soldiers

A colleague sent this short documentary to me highlighting the atrocities that are happening in Uganda under the watch of warlord Joseph Kony. He’s number 1 on the International Criminal Courts’ list of warlords that should be prosecuted for his crimes against humanity.

I thought I’d share this video to bring some awareness to one of the many crimes that are taken place in Uganda. Crimes against women are appalling, but even more so are crimes against our children – the future!
